Travel advisory list

Connecticut adds four states to its COVID-19 travel advisory. Section 2.

- By Alex Putterman

Connecticut added Delaware, Maryland, Ohio and West Virginia to its COVID-19 travel advisory Tuesday, while removing Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

With the additions, the advisory now includes 34 states, matching its previous high, as well as the territory of Guam.

Under the travel advisory, visitors from listed states must fill out a travel form upon arriving in Connecticut, then quarantine for 14 days. The state has so far issued a small number of fines to travelers who violate the terms of the advisory.

Ohio, Maryland and Delaware returned to the advisory Tuesday after previously falling off, while West Virginia was added for the first time. Puerto Rico had been on the advisory since late July, and the Virgin Islands had been added in early August.

Tuesday’s advisory update comes as some states that had been coronavirus hot-spots see their outbreaks ease but others experience increases in transmission. Though the states added to the advisory Tuesday have not had dramatic spikes, all have seen more cases in recent weeks than they did previously.

States are automatically added to Connecticut’s travel advisory when they average 10 or more new coronavirus cases a day for every 100,000 residents or record a positivity rate of 10% or higher over a

seven-day period.

Created in partnership with New York and New Jersey, the advisory applies to anyone who visits the state for more than 24 hours after spending more than 24 hours in a listed state. The advisory includes an exemption for critical infrastructure workers who are traveling for business. Travelers who cannot self-quarantine, such as those visiting for a funeral, may present a negative COVID-19 test instead.

The advisory began with eight state in late-June then ballooned to 34 states in July and early August. It had shrunk slightly in recent weeks before Tuesday’s additions.

The nationwide rate of COVID-19 cases is currently lower than in July but still much higher than in most other countries. As some recent hot-spot state such as Arizona, California and Florida have seen fewer cases, states including North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Missouri have experienced significant spikes.

In Connecticut, the rate of new cases has remained low for several months. The state currently has the nation’s third lowest positivity rate, according to the website Covid Act Now.

The following states are currently on Connecticut’s travel advisory list: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
