Hayes’ reaction to Zoombombers
I appreciated U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes’ article [courant.com, Oct. 13, “After racist Zoombombing, ‘Stop saying this doesn’t happen here’”], although I wish racist incidents like these would cease.
It is incomprehensible to me that even after blatant attacks of racism, like what Hayes and her supporters endured on this Zoom call, that people can still turn a blind eye to the racial injustice in this country. Additionally, as a Black woman, Hayes is, as she says, “expected to press on, to ignore this behavior, [and] to not talk explicitly about it because it is uncomfortable.”
Black women have always been easy targets for violence and hate, and we need to stand behind them. As Hayes said, “Listen. Don’t project. Don’t make judgments. Just listen.”
