Edith “Edie” Mary ( Waldner) Payne, 84, of Middletown, wife of t he l ate J ohn A. Payne, J r. , passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at Middlesex Hospital. Born i n Middletown, she was t he daughter of the late Clarence and Edith (Zetterholm) Waldner.

Edie l i ved i n Middletown all of her l i f e. She graduated Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1954 and the Ona M. Wilcox School of Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse f or over t hirty years at Middlesex Hospital, Cromwell Crest, Wadsworth Glen and private nursing. Edie l oved to play setback, croquet, attend family picnics, follow baseball and golf and play a mean game of badminton. Most of all, Edie l oved her family and f r i ends.

Edie i s survived by her daughter, Diana L. Payne and her partner Thomas Dyer of Middletown; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with her husband and parents, Edie was predecease­d by three brothers, Clarence, William and Edward Waldner; and a sister, Anna Magetteri.

The f amily would l i ke t o say a special t hank you t o Middlesex Hospital Emergency Department and t he Weiss Hospice Unit for their wonderful care.

Family and friends may call on Thursday evening, April 8th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church Street, Middletown where masks and social distancing are r equired.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 9 at 12:00 pm i n the State Veterans Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane, Middletown.
