Bowden, 91, has terminal condition

Hall of Fame college football coach Bobby Bowden announced Wednesday he has been diagnosed with a terminal medical condition.

“I’ve always tried to serve God’s purpose for my life, on and off the field, and I am prepared for what is to come,” Bowden said in a statement. “My wife Ann and our family have been life’s greatest blessing. I am at peace.”

The 91-year-old Bowden was hospitaliz­ed last October after he tested positive for COVID-19. The positive test came a few days after returning to his Tallahasse­e home from a lengthy hospital stay for an infection in his leg. He didn’t disclose his current condition in his statement.

During his 34 years coaching Florida State, Bowden amassed a 315-98-4 record and built the Seminoles into a national power, winning 12 ACC championsh­ips and national titles in 1993 and 1999. He won 357 games during his 40 years in college coaching and was selected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006.

Bowden retired after the 2009 season.

Washington State coach Nick Rolovich announced that he has chosen not to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, and that he would be remotely joining Pac-12 media day on Tuesday. The Cougars had two games canceled during the 2020 season because of COVID-19 issues and finished with a record of 1-3 in Rolovich’s first season . ... The University of Iowa plans to name the field at Kinnick Stadium for Duke Slater, a trailblazi­ng Black player who was an All-america tackle a century ago, The AP reported. After leaving Iowa, Slater became the NFL’S first Black lineman and a pioneering Chicago judge, and he will be inducted next month into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Slater died in 1966 at age 67.

NFL: The 49ers and LB Fred Warner agreed to a five-year, $95 million contract that includes $40.5 million guaranteed, ESPN reported. The deal will make 24-year-old Pro Bowler the highest-paid off-ball linebacker in league history . ... On the eve of the Steelers’ first training camp practice, veteran LB Vince Williams announced his retirement. Williams, 31, played eight seasons with the Steelers after being selected in the sixth round of the 2013 draft.

NHL: Commission­er Gary Bettman said next season’s NHL schedule will include a break for the 2022 Winter Olympics even though there’s no commitment the league’s players will go to Beijing in February. The NHL participat­ed in five consecutiv­e Olympics beginning in 1998 before skipping the 2018 Games in South Korea.

Soccer: Arsenal pulled out of the Florida Cup and canceled its preseason trip to the U.S. after a small number of members in its traveling party tested positive for COVID19. The Premier League club had been scheduled to depart Thursday and play against Inter Milan on Sunday in Orlando. Everton and Colombia’s Millonario­s are the other teams participat­ing in event . ... The owners of the NFL’S Vikings finalized the acquisitio­n of Orlando City, giving the Wilf family control of the MLS franchise. The price wasn’t disclosed for the purchase that includes the Orlando Pride club in the National Women’s Soccer League and Exploria Stadium in addition to several training facilities and other assets.
