Barbara A. Martino, 85, of Avon, beloved wife of Retired Avon Police Chief James A. Martino Jr., passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 11, 2021, at home
surrounded by her loving family. Born in Hartford on March 3, 1936, daughter of the late William H. and Hope B. (Grover) Whalen, Barbara was raised in Suffield and was a 1953 graduate of Suffield High School. Upon graduation she began her career at First National Bank of Suffield. Barbara started as a teller and eventually moved into the loan department, retiring in 1995 as a loan officer with 42 years of service. Barbara was a longtime communicant
of the Church of St. Ann in Avon; she and her husband founded the Avon Food Pantry and have continued to work and support the food pantry for many years. In her earlier years she was an avid bowler, she also loved to read and travel. Her greatest joy, however, was spending time with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Retired Avon Police Chief James A. Martino Jr. of Avon; her sons: James A. Martino III of Avon, Harold W. Martino and his wife Elizabeth of Avon; her grandchildren: Alicia P. Martino and her husband Benjamin of Bristol, Ethan J. Martino of Avon, William H. Martino of Glastonbury, Hope S. Martino of Avon; and her greatgranddaughter Brooklin A. Martino of Bristol; and her sister, Ruth Packard of Harwich, MA. She was predeceased by her sister, Muriel Deck and her parents.
