Elma K. Smith, 85, of Avon, CT passed away peacefully at her home with her loving husband of 65 years, Matthew Smith, by
her side on September 13, 2021.
Born in Derby, Elma was the daughter of Paul and Anna (Dubail) Clapp. She grew up in Shelton, and she and her family lived there as the
children were growing up. In addition to homemaking, she owned and operated Elma's Secretarial Service prior to moving with her husband to New Jersey, where she served for a number
of years as Administrative Assistant to the Controller of Bayway Refining Company. She was an avid skier into her seventies, and she loved gardening, traveling and bicycling, and was active in all three well into her eighties. She also enjoyed opera and theater.
Elma is survived by her husband and love of her life, Matthew Smith; her son, Douglas Smith (Janet); her daughters, Sonia Person (Sam), Elizabeth Trimpin, and
Rebecca Van Ausdeln (Leo); nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. In addition to her parents, Elma
was predeceased by her sister, Gwendolyn Blaskewicz, and her son-in-law, Rudolph Trimpin.
A memorial service will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at the West Avon Congregational Church, 280 Country Club Road, Avon CT 06001. There will be no calling hours and burial arrangements are private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Elma's memory may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266.
