Uconn wins Big East regular season baseball title

No. 13 Uconn (42-10, 16-2) wrapped up its second-straight Big East regular season baseball title Sunday with a 17-6 win against Xavier on Senior Day at Elliot Ballpark in Storrs. In front of 1,308 fans, the Huskies scored five runs in the first and six in the third to take an 11-2 lead. All five runs in the first came with two outs with RBI singles from Ben Huber and Bryan Padilla and a three-run homer off the bat of Korey Morton.

Matt Donlan started the surge in the third with a solo homer to right field, his ninth of the year, to make it 6-2. David Smith registered his fourth-straight multihit game with an RBI single in the third and a homer in the fifth. Erik Stock hit a bases-clearing double in the sixth to make it 15-6. Seven Huskies recorded multi-hit efforts on the afternoon.

Uconn finished 18-4 at Elliot Ballpark, its second most wins at home in a season. The Huskies won 19 in 2010.

Next up, the Huskies travel to Bryant for the final midweek game of the season at 3 p.m. at Conaty Park.

Three homers carry Yard Goats past Sea Dogs: The Hartford Yard Goats took a seven-run lead thanks to home runs by Brenton Doyle, Kyle Datres and Aaron Schunk and held on to beat the Portland Sea Dogs 7-6 in front of a third straight sellout crowd at Dunkin’ Donuts Park in Hartford. Doyle reached base four times, and Yard Goats starter Nick Bush pitched five scoreless innings. Hartford won four of six against Portland, winning its third consecutiv­e series. The Yard Goats finished their homestand 8-4 and have won 10 of their last 14 games.

In the second inning, Schunk lined a two-run double in the left-center gap to put the Yard Goats ahead, 2-0. Doyle made it 3-0 in the fourth with his fourth home run of the season. The Yard Goats scored three more in the sixth. Datres put Hartford up 4-0 on his second homer of the season. Doyle then reached base for a third straight time on a single, then stole second. Schunk followed up with a moonshot to left field for 6-0 lead. The home run was Schunk’s fourth of the season, and he finished the game with four RBIS.

Yard Goats starter Nick Bush was dominant against the Sea Dogs for the second time this series, allowing three hits and retiring the last six batters he faced. In the ninth, David Hamilton hit a three-run double for the Sea Dogs. RBI singles by Nick Sogard and Pedro Castellano­s cut the Yard Goats lead to 7-6 before PJ Poulin struck out Kole Cottam to seal the win.

The Yard Goats begin a six-game series against the Baysox in Bowie, Md., Tuesday at 6 p.m.
