Cora says chance Casas may get September call

- By Steve Hewitt

Triston Casas may be getting his call to the Red Sox soon after all.

A week after Alex Cora said the club hadn’t any discussions yet on promoting Casas, there’s been a shift, and it appears the Red Sox prospect may be Bostonbound at some point over the final month of the season, possibly as soon as Thursday. As the calendar flips to September, the Red Sox will add two players to their roster — one pitcher and one position player — and Casas is a candidate.

“We’ve been talking about it and there’s a few names we have discussed,” Cora said Wednesday during his weekly appearance on WEEI’S Merloni, Fauria & Mego. “Obviously the decision will be made (Thursday), but he’s one of the names that we have discussed. I believe at one point, there’s a chance he’ll be here. I’m not saying it’s tomorrow or in two weeks or in three weeks, but I do believe there’s a chance that he’ll be part of this in September.”

That’s a stark contrast from last week, when Cora said the Red Sox had not discussed a call-up for Casas, the 22-yearold first baseman ranked as Boston’s No. 3 prospect.

“It hasn’t been brought up to me, so that’s where we’re at,” Cora said last Tuesday. “He hasn’t played this year, he didn’t play last year. That’s the way I see it. He’s still developing. That’s my opinion. He needs to get his reps, keep getting his reps and keep getting better. He was out for three months. So, I think that’s part of the equation. We haven’t talked about that recently.”

Cora caught by surprise:

When Red Sox president Sam Kennedy told The Athletic this week that Cora and chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom would return in 2023, it seemed obvious despite a season that’s been much worse than expected. Cora, whose contract options for 2023 and 2024 were picked up after last season, admitted being a bit caught off guard by his future coming into question.

“I was surprised, but you never know in this business,” Cora told WEEI. “We have a good relationship, we’re working and I know we struggled this year. but it’s been good the last few years as far as communication and the things that we want to do.”
