Spotts, Allan

-

The Mayor of Cromwell, Allan Spotts, has left the building. He passed away at Hartford Hospital on Sunday, September 4, 2022 with his wife by his side. He was born on April 2, 1945, in Newport, Rhode Island to Barbara and Joseph Spotts. He attended Newport schools and the University of Rhode Island. He served in the United States Air Force from 1966 thru 1970. Allan was stationed at Hahn Air Force Base in Germany and always dreamed of going back. The Air Force sparked Allan's

love for flying. In 1986 he earned his private pilot license and joined a partnership owning a Piper Arrow four seat plane.

His career in Healthcare Management began at New Britain General Hospital where he was responsible for scheduling 900 nursing staff “without a computer.” After that he managed various medical practices around the Hartford area and finally retired from Consulting Ophthalmology in 2011.

After retirement, Allan volunteered at Bradley International Airport as a Travelers Aid Ambassador helping travelers as they passed through Hartford. He also volunteered for the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) providing medical transportation for those that couldn't drive themselves.

Allan's real passion was the Town of Cromwell. He was a Boy Scout leader, worked the “chain gang” for youth football, and ran Little League concessions with his wife Karen for three years. In 1999 he organized the 350th/150th Anniversary of Cromwell celebration

which included a parade down Main Street with the world-famous Mummers. He served on the Board of Selectmen, Board of Finance, Economic Development Commission, Town Council, and Fire Commission,

chaired the Cromwell Republican Town Committee, and acted as a Justice of the Peace. The Riverport Festival, which he chaired for many years, was an accomplishment of which he was very proud because it brought the whole town together.

His election in November as the Mayor of Cromwell gave Allan a great sense of accomplishment. He had

dreams and plans for Cromwell that he hoped to fulfill during his term, but it was not meant to be.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Karen; his brother and sister-in-law Stephen and Jackie of El Paso, TX; his mother-in-law Eileen of Newington; sister-in- law Joan of Raleigh NC; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Kathy and Conard of Richardson, TX; daughter-in-law Melanie of Las Vegas NV; and Mark, his best friend forever. He was predeceased by his beloved son Timothy who he missed terribly. They are now together. Karen would like to thank the amazing, compassionate, and supportive staff on Bliss 3 North and Center 10 at Hartford Hospital for the care they gave to Allan. Watching them inspired awe and is something she will never forget. “Thank you, Emily, Laura, Malory, Shannon, Alexa, Sam,

Nicole, Lindsey, Debbie, and all the others who are in my heart.”

Calling hours will be Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022, from 1-4:00 p.m. at Cromwell Funeral Home, 506 Main St., Cromwell. A private funeral service will be at St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church in East Berlin.
