Retooled ‘Cinderella’ coming to NYC

-

Andrew Lloyd Webber is saying goodbye to his last remaining show on Broadway and welcoming another. The musical theater icon recently announced that his retooled version of “Cinderella” will land in New York City in February with new songs, a new leading lady and a new title.

“Bad Cinderella” — borrowing the title from a key song in the show rather than using London West End’s blander name “Cinderella” — will star Linedy Genao in the title role. She has had ensemble roles in “Dear Evan Hansen” and “On Your Feet!”

Lloyd Webber hopes his fairy tale has a better ending on Broadway than it did in London, where “Cinderella” closed less than a year after opening and suffered heavy losses, particularly when COVID19 scrambled its run.

Lloyd Webber is closing his “The Phantom of the Opera” on Broadway in 2023. A fixture on Broadway since 1988, it will close Feb. 18, a day after previews begin for “Bad Cinderella,” meaning a

Lloyd Webber musical will have been performing on Broadway every single playing night since September 1979.

Netflix’s ‘Glass Onion’ to play in major chains:

For the first time, major U.S. theater chains will play a Netflix release after exhibitors and the streaming service reached a deal for a nationwide sneak-peak run of Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives

Out Mystery.”

Netflix announced Thursday that AMC, Regal Cinemas and Cinemark will carry the “Knives Out” sequel for an exclusive one-week run beginning Nov. 23, one month before it begins streaming Dec. 23.

Until now, those chains have largely refused to program Netflix releases. But as theatrical windows have shortened, and streaming-only releases have sometimes lacked the buzz generated by moviegoing, Netflix and the chains finally found common ground.

Summer trial for Kesha, Dr. Luke:

After almost a decade, the legal fight between pop singer Kesha and producer Dr. Luke is headed to trial in New

York next summer, a judge said Friday.

Judge Jennifer Schecter said jury selection could start in either late June or early July. She broached the dates at the end of a hearing that worked through some of the legal issues and arguments that need to be resolved before the trial can start.

The singer and the producer sued each other in 2014. She alleged that he drugged and raped her in 2005 and emotionally abused her for years. He accused her of defaming him, saying she fabricated her claims to try to get out of her record contract.

A court later dismissed Kesha’s sexual abuse claims because of time limits and other legal issues, without ruling on whether the allegations had merit.
