Finalists for MVP, other NFL awards announced

Eagles quarterbac­k Jalen Hurts, Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson and Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes are finalists for The Associated Press 2022 NFL MVP and offensive player of the year awards.

Bills QB Josh Allen and Bengals QB Joe Burrow also are finalists for MVP.

The winners will be announced at NFL Honors on Feb. 9. A nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league completed voting before the start of the playoffs.

49ers edge rusher Nick Bosa, Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones and Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons are the finalists for defensive player of the year.

The Giants’ Brian Daboll, Jaguars’ Doug Pederson and 49ers’ Kyle Shanahan are the finalists for coach of the year award.

Baseball: The Rays and LHP Jeffrey Springs agreed to a four-year, $31 million contract that could be worth $65.75 million over five seasons. The 30-year-old was among seven Rays who swapped arbitratio­n figures with the team Jan. 13.

NBA: Billionair­e mortgage lender Mat Ishbia’s purchase of a majority stake in the Suns and WNBA’S Mercury at a $4 billion valuation is expected to become official in the next two weeks, ESPN reported.

NHL: The defending Stanley Cup champion Avalanche held off the Capitals 3-2 on Tuesday night in Denver to give coach Jared Bednar his franchise-record 266th victory. Bednar, coaching his 500th game for the Avs, improved to 266-18549 and passed former Nordiques boss Michel Bergeron for the most coaching victories in franchise history.
