Joseph Anthony Kizis, age 96 and beloved husband of late wife Elaine Dorothy (Adamy) Kizis, passed away peacefully at Manchester Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family on January 31, 2023. He was born in Hartford to the late Charles and Gertrude (Juralicius) Kizis on November 14, 1926. Joseph grew up in South Windsor, attending the one-room schoolhous­e on Ellington Road (now a museum) and Ellsworth High School before enlisting with the US Navy at age 17 to serve during WWII. He married his lovely wife Elaine on December 8, 1951, and they enjoyed over 60 years together until Elaine passed. Joe owned and ran Gulf, Amoco, and Texaco gas stations on Route 5, and he later worked as a mechanic at Mack Trucking and White Trucking in Hartford and, prior to retirement, at Wooster Express/north Penn in South Windsor.

Joseph loved attending his grandchild­ren's and greatgrand­children's sporting events, as well as gardening and maintainin­g his yard. He also enjoyed playing games with his grandchild­ren and their children, bowling, trips to the casinos, and watching UCONN sports. Hunting for treasures at Tag sales and refurbishi­ng his “finds” were hobbies he and Elaine enjoyed together. He was a member of the Teamsters Local #671 and a member of the American Legion Post #133, and he had the honor of being the Grand Marshall in the 2022 South Windsor Memorial Day Parade. His grandchild­ren will always have the memory of the “Super Sandwiches” and “Super Beans” he would make for them.

Joseph is survived by his son Joseph Kizis, Jr. and his wife Paula of Reno, Nevada; his daughter Christine Soucy and her husband Steven of Harrison, Maine; his son Scott Kizis and his wife Karen of South Windsor; and his grandchild­ren Steven Soucy, Jr. and his wife Karis, Jeremy Soucy, Scott Kizis, Jr., Rebecca Kizis, and Alex Kizis. He also leaves behind six beloved greatgrand­children Allison, Cal, Aubrina, Carter, Brayden and Sophie. Joseph was pre-deceased by his brothers John Galish, Tom Kizis, Justin Kizis, and his sisters Julie Hayes and Gertrude West.

The family would like the thank the staff at Manchester Memorial Hospital and VHNS Hospice for their loving care and support. His family will receive friends from 9-11AM on Friday February 10 at the Samsel & Carmon Home at 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor, with a funeral service at the same location at 11:00AM.
