Uconn moves up despite falling to South Carolina

- By Lila Bromberg

Uconn women’s basketball moved up one spot in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll released Monday following a close loss to No. 1 South Carolina.

The Huskies are ranked No. 4 in this week’s poll. This is their best ranking since Jan. 9 after spending the last three weeks at No. 5. They have been ranked as high as No. 3 this season.

Still with just eight players available, Uconn (21-3, 13-0 Big East) completed a stretch of five games in 12 days with a 64-54 win over Providence last Wednesday, followed by a 81-77 loss to the top-ranked Gamecocks on Sunday.

As expected, South Carolina stayed atop the rankings as the unanimous No. 1 team. Indiana jumped up two spots to No. 2 for its best ranking in school history, LSU stayed at No. 3 and Iowa moved up one spot to No. 5.

Stanford fell out of the top five for the first time all season after suffering its third loss of the year, to unranked Washington, 72-67, on Sunday. The Cardinal are ranked No. 6.

Rounding out the rest of the top 10 are No. 7 Utah, No. 8 Maryland, No. 9 Duke and No. 10 Notre Dame.

Villanova is the only other Big East team ranked or receiving votes. The Wildcats moved up four spots to No. 15.

Also on Monday, Aaliyah Edwards was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll. The junior forward scored 25 points on 10 of 14 shooting against the Gamecocks, holding her own against one of the best frontcourts in the country.

The Huskies are back on the road this Wednesday for a matchup with Marquette at 8 p.m. on SNY. They’ll then travel to face Georgetown on Saturday.
