Yankees icon Jeter joins Fox MLB team
Derek Jeter is ready for his next chapter.
During the Fox pregame show prior to Sunday’s Super Bowl LVII matchup between the Eagles and Chiefs outside Phoenix, the network announced the Yankees legend will join their MLB team, beginning in the 2023 season.
Jeter walked on set, hugging NFL Hall of Famer and Giants great Michael Strahan and former Yankees teammate Alex Rodriguez, as he was welcomed into the Fox family.
“I never thought in my wildest dreams that we’ll be reunited,” Rodriguez said while holding a Fox branded pinstripe jersey with Jeter’s name. “But here we are, Derek to the Fox family.”
Jeter then responded, “I appreciate it.”
The two former Bomber frenemies are again on the same team after playing with each other from 2004-2014 in the Bronx, including the Yankees most recent World Series title team in 2009.
The five-time World Series champ will also join another rival in former Red Sox slugger David Ortiz on the Fox MLB team.
“I was on set at the World Series in Philly [last season], and Ortiz kept showing me his World Series ring,” Jeter said during the pregame telecast. “So I just figured I’d join the team now, so we could humble him a little bit.”
Last week, the 14-time All-star was named one of the cover athletes on MLB The Show 23.
Jeter, 48, was a first-ballot Hall of Fame selection in 2020 when he fell just one vote shy of being a unanimous selection by the Baseball Writers’ Association.
After 20 seasons with the Yankees, Jeter — who retired after the 2014 season — traded in his pinstripes for executive garb with the Miami Marlins. The Yankee captain joined a group that bought the Marlins in September 2017. He then took over as the face of the struggling franchise. Jeter spent four seasons in Miami before stepping down as Marlins CEO in February 2022.
“I think the direction of the organization had changed and that was not what I had signed up for,” Jeter told ESPN’S Hannah Storm in July 2022. “And you know you have to believe in the direction, especially if you are going to be the forward face.”
The MLB season begins on March 30, with all 30
