The Connecticut Sun announced the official re-signing of center Brionna Jones on Monday.

The two-time WNBA All-star and 2022 Sixth Player of the Year, who was a free agent this offseason, signed a one-year deal with the franchise.

“We are so excited to have Breezy back,” said Sun head coach Stephanie White. “She’s a proven winner that has worked tirelessly to become one of the best players in our league. She impacts our team on the floor and in the locker room, she is a tremendous ambassador for our community. I can’t wait to work with her this summer.”

The Sun put a core tag on Brionnna Jones last month following the trade of 2021 MVP Jonquel Jones to the New York Liberty. Per team policy, terms of the one-year deal were not disclosed.

Jones has spent her entire pro career in Connecticut since being selected eighth overall in the 2017 WNBA Draft out of the University of Maryland. She was praised for putting the team before herself by coming off the bench last season despite being a starting talent. She averaged 13.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game while ranking fourth in the league in field goal percentage (56.9%) and second in offensive rebounds per game (2.6).

Prior to being named the Sixth Player of the Year last season, Jones won the WNBA Most Improved Player award in 2021.

“Brionna has played a significant role in the Sun’s success over the past few years,” Sun general manager Darius Taylor said. “We are super excited to have her stay in Connecticut and continue to watch her game flourish as we look to compete for a title this season and beyond.”

Jones is currently playing overseas for USK Prague alongside Sun forward Alyssa Thomas, averaging 19.6 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

The Sun open the 2023 season on the road on on Friday, May 19 against the Indiana Fever.
