Windham Tech breaks 31-game skid vs. Prince Tech

- By Lori Riley Hartford Courant

Windham Tech coach Jeff Belanger had a 31-game losing streak against Prince Tech, going back to his high school days, when the Falcons beat his Mighty Tigers his sophomore year in the first round of the 1990 boys basketball state tournament.

“They’ve had my number, let’s just say that,” Belanger said. “They’ve been the class of our league.”

But the streak was broken last Friday. Trey Lindsay scored 27 points and 28 rebounds and Brody Belanger, Jeff ’s son, added 17 in the 72-61 win at Prince Tech.

“They were dominant physically throughout the game,” Belanger said of the two players, both seniors. “That was a big key. They’ve been kind of unstoppable all year. They hit back-to-back in the baseball lineup, they’re the 1 and 2 pitchers on the baseball team. Now they’re doing it on the court as well.

“Trey is in the post, he’s a rebounding machine. Brody is third all-time in threepointers in school history for boys.”

Windham Tech (14-3) is on an 11-game win streak, which could be tested this week when the Mighty Tigers face Windsor Locks, a Division V semifinalist last year. It’s their longest win streak since 198788, when the team went 19-0 to start the season.

Belanger, who graduated from the school in 1992, has been the head coach since 1998 and was an assistant before that.

He had a good feeling before Friday’s game and texted his former principal Kirk Murad (who went to the game to witness history) about it.

“I told him, ‘This is our year,’ ” Belanger said.
