Cops, fire chief among Glastonbury’s top earners

Town manager, who made No. 1, says public safety is main priority

Glastonbury’s list of top 25 wage-earners included 19 police officers, a fire chief and five town officials, records show.

The list for calendar year 2022 was obtained by the Courant swiftly and free of charge in response to a Freedom of Information Act request.

Town Manager Richard J. Johnson, who was number one on the list at a salary of $205,246, explained the list is likely affected by positions that were in transition during 2022, including director of finance, director of planning and land use services and sanitation superintendent.

Johnson also said the overtime earned by police officers includes extra duty pay covered by outside sources who hire officers for jobs.

He said the Glastonbury Police Department is about at full capacity. He said those officers who got on the top 25 list by working overtime worked hard and sacrificed time with their families.

“Public safety is always at the top of the (priority) list,” as well as the safety of the officers, Johnson said.

The salaries on the list are rounded to the nearest dollar. In addition to Johnson, the list from highest to lowest includes:

„ Police Sgt. David M. Goncalves earned $182,455, with a base salary of $105,611 and $76,843 in overtime.

„ Police Sgt. Jeff Hodder earned $182,398, with a base salary of $116,367 and $66,031 in overtime.

„ Police Officer Christopher Carlone earned $169,018, with a base pay of $98,665 and $70,353 in overtime.

„ Police Officer Steven Moyer earned $162,305 with a base salary of $99,493 and $62,812 in overtime.

„ Police officer Patrick Hemingway earned $152,837 with a base pay of $94,383 and overtime of $58,454.

„ Police Sgt. Brandon S. Ritchie earned $152,716, with a base pay of $108,049 and $44,666 in overtime.

„ Police Officer Sergey A. Sharov earned $152,215, with a base pay of $101,393 and overtime of $50,821.

„ Police Chief Marshall S. Porter earned a salary of $151,805.

„ Town Engineer/manager of Physical Services, Daniel A. Pennington earned a salary of $150,289.

„ Director of Parks & Recreation and Human Services Lisa M. Zerio earned a salary of $144,191.

„ Police Agent Adam Vanskiver earned $141,969, with a base pay of $104,542 and overtime of $37,427. A police agent is a supervisory step before a sergeant rank.

„ Police Agent Peter R. Brander earned $141,477, with a base pay of $105,357 and $36,119 in overtime.

„ Police Officer Laura Caruso earned $140,265, with $92,117 in base pay and $48,148 in overtime.

„ Police Lt. Anthony Pagliughi earned $139,855 with a base pay of $116,888 and $22,967 in overtime.

„ Police Lt. Kevin Szydlo earned $138,970 with a base pay of $123,847 and $15,122 in overtime.

„ Police Officer Christian L. Thomas earned $137,906, with base pay of $86,323 and overtime of $51,583.

„ Police Officer Bryant W. Cleveland earned $137,876 with a base pay of $94,218 and $43,658 in overtime.

„ Police Capt. Mark J. Catania earned a salary of $137,846.

„ Police Lt. Jason M. Adduci earned $136,274, with a base pay of $118,386 and $17,888 in overtime.

„ Fire Chief Michael P. Thurz earned a salary of $135,304.

„ Communications Supervisor Eugene S. Jopeck earned $134,144, with a base pay of $83,798 and overtime of $50,345.

„ Director of Human Resources, Sherri L. Tanguay earned a salary of $133,626.

„ Police Officer Alex Torres earned $132,063, with a base pay of $78,613 and overtime of $53,449.89.

„ Police Sgt. Jesse J. Stone earned $131,331, with a base pay of $115,555 and $15,776 in overtime.
