Sardinha, Catherine
Catherine M. Sardinha (Torza) of Glastonbury, wife of the late Joseph M. Sardinha, peacefully transitioned from this life at the age of 94 on Friday, March 3, 2023. She was born in Hartford, CT on November 11, 1928, to the late Peter and Angelina Torza. She lived in Wethersfield most of her life until she moved to The Hearth at
Glastonbury in 2016.
Catherine grew up in the south end of Hartford and attended Bulkeley High School. She graduated from Central Connecticut State College in 1968 with a degree in teaching and received her master's degree in elementary education at Southern Connecticut State College in 1972. She became a teacher at Emersonwilliams Elementary School in Wethersfield, CT and was teacher of the year from 1985-1986. She was a member of Corpus Christi Church in Wethersfield. Catherine enjoyed an active life of hiking, skiing, as well as extensive travel. She visited every continent in the world which was a lifelong goal. She loved her nieces and nephews and took them on camping, hiking, and skiing trips with her over many years. Throughout her life, she volunteered for various organizations, including, the Appalachian Mountain Club and Yankee Council/ayh from 1993-2008 located in Windsor, CT particularly the service program for the blind. She was responsible for many tasks working with the blind including hikes and canoe trips.
Catherine and her late husband Joe were involved with Habitat for Humanity from 1993-2003. Catherine was also involved with the Bushnell Performing Arts Center in Hartford, CT. Catherine is survived by her brother, Hugo Torza of Englewood, Florida, she is predeceased by her husband of 29 years, Joseph Sardinha (2003), brothers, Felice Torza (1983), Camille Torza (1976), Aquitania Torza (2020) and her sister, Patty Lafrancis (2019). She leaves behind 19 wonderful and muchloved nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and nephews.
No public services will be held. A private family memorial will be held in June 2023. Memorial donations in Catherine's name may be made to the Appalachian Mountain Club www.outdoors.org/donate. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff at The Hearth at Glastonbury, and Vitas Hospice, especially Michelle Cabana, her nurse, and Millie Abrah, her aide.
