Philip M. Grant, age 96, of the Melrose section of East Windsor, widower of Selma (Larson) Grant, died at home on March 9, 2023. He was born on June 4, 1926 to the late Clyde and Lois (Candage) Grant, and was a resident of Melrose all his life. He owned and operated the family dairy farm until his retirement in 1991. He graduated from Ellsworth High School in South Windsor in 1944 and then served in the Navy until the end of World War II. He graduated from the University of Connecticu­t School of Agricultur­e in 1949, where he met his wife Selma, to whom he was married for 69 years.

Phil was an avid reader and a train buff. He and Selma took many interestin­g trips on the train and other travels including to Sweden and Hawaii. He was a life-long member of the Broad Brook Congregati­onal Church, and at one time served on the East Windsor Planning and Zoning Commission. He belonged for many years to the dairy cooperativ­es CMPA, Yankee Milk and Agrimark. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau, was at one time president of the Hartford County Farm Bureau, and also served on the State Board of Directors. He was the last surviving student of the Melrose one-room schoolhous­e. Phil is survived by his children: Lois Audinot and her husband Vicente of Melrose, son-in-law Stanley Chandler of Melrose, George Grant and his wife Leslie of Somers, and Donald Grant and his wife Ruth of Melrose. He also leaves six granddaugh­ters: Christa and husband Matthew, Signe and husband Julian, Shiloh and husband Christophe­r, Kathryn and partner Eric, Christine, and Natalie and husband Michael, and step-grandson Jason. Also, six great-granddaugh­ters: Anna, Sarai, Brynja, Noelle, Elia and Camille. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predecease­d by his daughter Elizabeth Chandler and his sister Elva Collins.

The family wishes to thank Comfort Keepers of Enfield, especially Roselyn Emmanuel, for their care of Phil; and also the Visiting Nurse & Health Services of Connecticu­t, especially Eileen, Maria and Marie. Calling hours will be held at Leete-stevens Enfield Chapel, 61 South Rd., Enfield, CT 06082 on Friday, March 24 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm; the memorial service will be held at the same location on Saturday, March 25 at 11:00 am.
