Hochman, Dr., Howard I.
Dr. Howard I. Hochman, 80, of Bloomfield, died at home surrounded by family on Tuesday March 28, 2023, from pancreatic cancer. He was the beloved husband for 57 years of Sally (Levine) Hochman. Born in Hartford, he was the son of William and Lillian (Brunswick) Hochman. He attended Weaver High School in Hartford and then his junior year and senior years at Conard High School in West Hartford, where he graduated. He received a Pharmacy degree from Uconn, a PH.D. in Pharmacology from Yale, and then returned to Uconn, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine. His career spanned 44 years, during which he served as an Associate Professor of Surgery at Uconn and was affiliated with Hartford Hospital and Connecticut Children's Medical Center. He trained many physicians in not only technical skills but also the “art” of medicine. His passion for mentoring residents was recognized by an endowed lectureship in his name as he was influential in shaping the next generation of pediatric urologists. He was well respected in the medical community and contributed to the advancement of clinical practice. Howard loved playing golf and deep-sea fishing. He enjoyed boating in Eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island. He was a longtime member of the Hartford Golf Club and enjoyed playing with his special Thursday golf group. He loved debating politics over coffee with his breakfast buddies. He was a loyal Boston Red Sox fan. At age 65, he attended Baseball Fantasy Camp in Ft. Myers, FL. His team won the pennant that year and he was awarded a championship ring at Fenway Park, a bucket list moment for Howard. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and a dear friend to many. Besides his adored wife Sally, he is survived by two sons: Jonathan Hochman and his wife Tamara of West Hartford; Dr. Jesse Hochman and his wife Dr. Jennifer Perone of Dallas, TX; six cherished grandchildren, Joseph, Remie, Liam, and Oliver (Jonathan and Tamara), and Nathaniel and Catherine (Jesse and Jennifer); sister, Irene Trueheart and her husband David; brother-in-law Ronald Levine and his wife Christine; and 104-year-old mother-in-law Fay Levine. A funeral will be held graveside on Sunday April 2 at 2:00PM with Rabbi Philip Lazowski officiating at the Hartford Mutual Society Cemetery, 74 Wolcott Road, in East Granby (adjacent to the Simsbury Airport). Immediately following interment, the family will receive friends at their home in Bloomfield. Thereafter, the family will observe a private period of mourning. The family expresses a heartfelt appreciation to all the medical professionals, staff, and Hospice caregivers that supported Howard and Sally over the last year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made for pancreatic cancer research, or to a charity of the donor's choice. May Howard's memory be a source of strength and a blessing.
