Maria Piedade M. Fernandes, 93, of West Hartford, beloved wife of the late Jose Fernandes, passed away peacefully on Pentecost Sunday, May 28, 2023, at West Hartford Health & Rehabilita­tion Center.

Born in Sandomil, Seia, Portugal, Maria immigrated to the U.S. in 1967. She resided in West Hartford for over 47 years and was a communican­t of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Hartford. Maria was a very devoted Catholic and would pray the rosary while taking walks in the neighborho­od and recently she would pray the rosary incessantl­y. To everyone she met, she would say with a smile, “God Bless You and Your Family.”

Maria was in her glory spending time with her family, friends, and neighbors and sharing fresh garden vegetables, homemade Chourizas and Paivantes with them. Maria enjoyed many family trips to the beach and summer trips to Portugal with her husband during their retirement years.

Maria is survived by her daughter, Maria Rosinda Fernandes; her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Bill Mazzatto; and her cherished grandchild­ren, Andrew and Emily Mazzatto, all of West Hartford. She is also survived by her sisters: Maria Helena Fernandes and Maria Conceicao Madeira, both of Portugal, and Odilia S. Hermenegil­do of West Hartford, her beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and her very dear friends. In addition to her devoted husband, Maria was predecease­d by her infant daughter Maria Margarida Fernandes, her brother Antonio Rui Sousa Madeira, and her sister Maria Fernanda (Joao) Madeira. Maria's family would especially like to thank the staff of West Hartford Health & Rehabilita­tion Center for their dedication and loving care given to Maria over the years.

Calling hours will be Thursday, (June 1) from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave, West Hartford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Kane Street, Hartford. Burial will follow in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield.
