Waterbury official arrested after crash that injured teen
A Waterbury city official is facing charges in connection with a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a teenager driving a scooter in Waterbury on Saturday, police said Wednesday.
The Waterbury Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for John Egan, 58, in connection with the incident. Egan voluntarily turned himself in on Wednesday evening at Waterbury police headquarters and has been charged with evading responsibility causing serious physical injury or death and failure to yield while turning left.
Egan was listed as the chairman of the Waterbury Zoning Commission on the city website earlier Wednesday, but his name was removed and the position is currently marked vacant.
Officers were called to the area of West Main Street and Highland Avenue at 12:05 a.m.
Saturday for a hit-and-run crash involving a scooter. As officers arrived, they found the teenage driver lying near the scooter in the road, according to police.
Police learned that the 17-yearold scooter driver, previously reported as a 16 year old, was struck by a maroon Cadillac XT5 that fled the scene.
Officers later found the Cadillac and impounded it. According to police, Egan is the registered owner of the vehicle. They allege he was operating the vehicle at the time of the incident.
The boy was transported to Connecticut Children’s in Hartford with life-threatening injuries where he remains in critical condition, according to police.
Egan posted a $50,000 bond Wednesday and is scheduled to be arraigned June 12.
