Newly signed QB will be inactive against Chiefs
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets have a new quarterback in the building, but he will not see the field during the team’s appearance on Sunday Night Football.
Trevor Siemian, who the Jets signed to the practice squad on Tuesday, will be inactive for their Week 4 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Siemian will be inactive as he learns Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett’s system before he is ready to suit up for any game action.
“He has a lot of games under his belt,” Saleh said Wednesday about Siemian. “He’s a quick learner, quick study from my understanding. Just getting him on the practice squad to help us out.”
After Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles in Week 1, the thought was the Jets would eventually sign another veteran quarterback. However, the team just elevated Tim Boyle from the practice squad while Zach Wilson took the starting reins the last two weeks.
Before Siemian was signed, the Jets were linked to free agent quarterbacks Chad Henne, Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan (who’s working as an NFL analyst for CBS Sports). Henne, who retired last offseason, reportedly declined an offer to sign with the Jets, while the team opted not to sign Wentz or Ryan.
Since their season-opening 22-16 OT victory against the Bills, Wilson has struggled in back-toback losses against the Cowboys and Patriots. In those games, Wilson has thrown for 327 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. He’s completing just 47.6% of his passes. Wilson also has a QB rating of 48.8 during that span, which is lower than his ugly first two seasons (69.7, 72.8) in the league.
“With regard to Z [Wilson], we all acknowledge he has to play better,” Saleh said. “He acknowledges that. Teammates acknowledge it and he acknowledges it himself. The key is to have confidence in yourself.”
