Edman, Joel

-

Joel Henry Edman, a lifelong resident of Plainville and a gentle soul, passed away at his home on Saturday January 20, 2024, at the age of 79. Born on May 28, 1944, in New Britain, CT he was one of three children of respected community leader and former First Selectman, the late Joseph Reinhold Edman and Mary (Richey) Edman.

Growing up on the Edman Dairy Farm, Joel developed an enduring attachment to nature and a profound appreciation for all living things that would shape his passions and pursuits throughout his life. He found solace and joy in frequent visits back to the farm, where he nurtured his love for the land and created a Christmas tree farm. The farm became a haven for gatherings with family and lifelong friends, where countless memories were made.

Upon graduating from Plainville High School in 1962, he enlisted in the US Navy, serving his country for three years during the Vietnam War. Honorably discharged in 1969, he returned to his roots, cultivating a successful career in the construction industry. For over four decades, he showcased his diligent work ethic and expertise as the scale house manager at Tilcon, where he connected with colleagues and clients alike.

Joel was a man of simple pleasures; whether it was hiking, taking countless trips up to Boy Rock, camping under starlit skies, or casting his line into tranquil waters, he reveled in the wonders of the great outdoors. Joel's love for tropical climates led him to embark on many island adventures and travels during his lifetime, but his heart always longed for the familiar comforts of home.

From tending to plants and trees to caring for animals, he embraced every aspect of the natural world with tender affection and respect. Remembered for his clever sense of humor and wit, his gentle spirit, and his friendly disposition, he left an indelible imprint on the many lives he touched.

He is survived by his daughters, Bethany Ayers and her children, Mikayla Jo and Austin; Ileen Roth, her husband Michael and their children, Kennedy and Greyson; his sister, Joanne Edman; and his niece, Alexandria Edman. He was predeceased by his sister, Judith Edman.

In lieu of flowers, Joel may be remembered with contributions to the US Forest Service, Plant- A- Tree program.

A celebration of Joel's life will be held on Friday February 2, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad St, Plainville.
