Franklin L. Hurlburt, 87, of Bristol, widower of Eleanor F. (Holt) Hurlburt, died on Tuesday (January 23, 2024) at The Pines at Bristol. Frank was born on February 22, 1936, in Bristol, and was the son of the late Roscoe and Elizabeth (Nevins) Hurlburt. He attended Plainville High School, and he met his future bride, Eleanor, at his grandfathe­r's store in Plainville. At age 17, Frank entered the Marines. He was stationed in Panama and upon his return to the United States, was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. Frank received a National Defense Service medal for serving during the Korean War, and he was discharged in 1955. A year later, he and Eleanor married in Hamden, CT and moved to Bristol, where they raised their three daughters. Frank worked for TRW Marlin Rockwell in Plainville as a bearings machinist, and then as a Gauge Inspector for Caval Tool in New Britain, until his retirement. He filled much of his retirement with part-time jobs as a shuttle driver for various businesses, including Pep Boys, Crowley Chrysler and Briarwood College. And, probably his favorite, he was also a school crossing guard in Bristol. He loved going to the coffee shop at Shop Rite, where he met his friends daily for coffee for many years. He was a member of the former Bristol Baptist Church, where he was sexton for 11 years. Frank enjoyed hunting and fishing, reading, bird-watching, painting, and had an amazing sense of humor. Frank is survived by three daughters: Cindy Emery and husband, William of Island Falls, ME, Diane Skelskey of Bristol, and Susan Vieira and Richard Wiederhorn of Burlington; two sisters: Carol Medvid of Warwick, Rhode Island, and Patricia Hurlburt and Betty Lou Richards of Camden, ME; his brother-in-law Clifton Holt, and wife Donna, of Plainville; six grandchild­ren: Christophe­r Emery, Allison Roundy and husband, Darren, Amy Kelley and husband, Mike, Ian Skelskey, Natalie and Joaquim Vieira, Jr.; seven great-grandchild­ren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predecease­d by sisters: Beverly Renda, Audrey Jackowiak, Katherine Dibella, and Betty Lou Williams. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation at Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, on Monday (January 29, 2024) between 11 AM and 12 Noon followed by a Service to Remember and Military Final Honors.
