St. Joe’s advances in Division III men’s tourney

Jalen Samuels had 29 points and 11 rebounds to lead the University of Saint Joseph men’s basketball team to a 97-83 win over Geneva in an NCAA Division III Tournament opening-round game on Friday in Ashland, Va.

The Blue Jays (25-4), competing in the regional hosted by Randolph-macon, advance to play the winner of the second game between Baruch and the host school on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

St. Joe’s led by a point at the half, but was able to open things up in the second thanks to the play of Samuels, Friedrich Feldrappe (19 points and seven rebounds) and Tyree Mitchell (15 points).

Women’s basketball

Baldwin Wallace 59, Trinity 54: At New Paltz, N.Y., Reilly Campell led all scorers with 30 points but it was enough as the Bantams were eliminated from the NCAA Division III tournament in the opener of the SUNY-NEW Paltz regional.

Campell was 12 of 22 from the field and added seven rebounds. Theresa Twardosky added 12 points for Trinity (19-8), which led 51-48 with 2:18 to go but could not hold on as the Yellow Jackets were able to convert 6 of 8 from the free throw line to rally and close the game out.

Baldwin Wallace (21-6), from Berea, Ohio, was led by Emily Irwin’s 19 points.

Women’s hockey

Huskies open postseason: Uconn, ranked No. 11 in the nation, will host a Hockey East quarterfin­al game against Holy Cross on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Toscano Family Ice Forum in Storrs. The Huskies, for the first time, enter the conference tournament as the regular-season champion and top seed.

Uconn, 22-7-5 overall and 19-4-4 in Hockey East, is led by Jada Habisch, who had a team-high 25 points on 15 goals and 10 assists. The Huskies won their three games against the Crusaders (8-23-3, 4-20-3) during the regular season.
