Bicyclist airlifted to hospital after colliding with car

A 68-year-old bicyclist was seriously injured after colliding with a car in Groton on Sunday afternoon, police said.

Around 2:38 p.m. Sunday, Groton Emergency Dispatch received a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle crash involving a passenger car and a bicyclist in the area of Allyn and Edgecomb streets in the Mystic section of Groton, according to the Groton Police Department.

As officers arrived at the scene, they located the bicyclist, identified as a Mystic woman, on the roadway. According to police, she was unconsciou­s with a serious head injury.

Additional emergency responders from the Mystic Fire Department, Mystic River Ambulance, Lawrence + Memorial Hospital paramedics, Lifestar helicopter and officers from the Stonington and Ledyard Police Department­s assisted at the scene, police said.

The bicyclist, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was transporte­d by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London then airlifted to Hartford Hospital for treatment, according to police.

The Honda CR-V involved in the crash remained on scene, police said. The driver, identified as a 50-year-old woman from Mystic, as well as two passengers, a 54-yearold man and a juvenile, were not injured in the crash, according to police.

A preliminar­y investigat­ion into the collision revealed that the bicyclist was heading north on Allyn Street when she veered into the northbound lane and collided with the Honda, police said.
