A threat before our eyes, so vote accordingly

- Del D. Gomes, Middletown

Former president Donald Trump claims he is suffering his ordeals, in the form of numerous trials, as a political backlash and a complete miscarriage of justice. Furthermore, he claims he is enduring this burden on behalf of his adoring fan base. He is elevating himself to the status of a political martyr. This, to any cognizant being, is completely and utterly false. He fails to address allegedly committing numerous crimes, also on behalf of his followers. Hence, he becomes another kind of martyr, as well.

We stand at a critical point where one of two political parties has been usurped by a failed business and television personality who believes he can do no wrong, based on elite exceptionalism. Moreover, the former Republican Party has been redesigned to service his needs rather than the needs of the nation. With the narrow margin in the House, he alone controls the purse. His design is to aid Russia with the destruction of two democracies. Trump is prepared to give up Ukraine and stated he would withhold U.S. assistance and “encourage” Russia to do as it wishes with those allies who fell short in military spending. Equally, he would install MAGA loyalists throughout government to serve him and him alone. No one could possibly have imagined this as even being possible: not the full and complete capitulation of the Republicans or the MAGA minions that support insurrection and the overthrow of our democracy.

America needs to wake up to this existential threat from within if we are to remain true to the U.S. Constitution and our future. Elevating an alleged criminal to the presidency will be a direct and deliberate surrender to Totalitarianism and a complete evasion of patriotic duty. America must stand, and Trump must be held to account. Vote accordingly.
