Dr. Suzanne M. Sgroi died after a brief illness on March 16, 2024, in Suffield, Connecticu­t. She was 81 years old.

Dr. Sgroi was born in Fulton, New York, on March 9, 1943. She was the daughter of Samuel S. Sgroi and Nancy A. (Dalia) Sgroi. Dr. Sgroi graduated from Syracuse University in 1965 and received her medical degree from the University of Buffalo Medical School in 1968.

After completing medical internship­s and residencie­s in Buffalo and Rochester, New York, Dr. Sgroi served as a rotating physician, Internal Medicine, on the Hospital Ship Hope mission to Natal, Brazil. Subsequent­ly, Dr. Sgroi practiced in the Department of Ambulatory Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in Hartford, Connecticu­t, which involved participat­ion in programs for research and treatment of child sexual abuse. She also served as Medical Director for the walk-in venereal disease clinic jointly run by the Hartford Health Department and Mount Sinai Hospital. After her time at Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Sgroi was active in private internal medicine and family medicine practice in Suffield, CT.

An active teacher and lecturer, Dr. Sgroi was director of the Saint Joseph College Institute for the treatment and Control of Child Sexual Abuse and was a regular lecturer on child abuse and sexual abuse of children at the Connecticu­t Police Academy. Over the course of her career, Dr. Sgroi presented lectures and workshops in the areas of physical child abuse, sexual abuse of children, and venereal disease in 49 states. She was a consultant, trainer, and expert witness on child sexual abuse in the courts of several states. In addition to these activities, Dr. Sgroi was Executive Director of New England Clinical Associates, a private treatment and education center for child sexual abuse in West Hartford, CT.

Dr. Sgroi published a number of articles on venereal disease and physical and sexual child abuse in many profession­al journals, as well as a book on venereal disease for young people (VD: A Doctor's Answers). She also wrote or co-authored books on sexual abuse (Handbook of Clinical Interventi­on in Child Sexual Abuse, and Vulnerable Population­s: Sexual abuse treatment for children, adult survivors, offenders, and persons with mental retardatio­n). Dr. Sgroi received multiple awards for excellence in the discipline­s she studied and practiced.

Dr. Sgroi is survived by her partner, Dr. Norah M. Sargent of Suffield, CT, three sisters, Celia Sgroi of Oswego, NY, Patricia (Richard) Noel of Richmond, VA, and Beth Kehoe of Waterbury, CT, and a nephew Daniel (Minako) Noel of Kakogawa, Japan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 11:30 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 446 Mountain Rd., Suffield. Burial will be at the convenienc­e of the family.
