John Thomas Cox, 81, of Newington, passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. He was the beloved husband of Carole (Magyar) Cox for 42 years. Born in New Haven, son of the late John and Mary (Luddy) Cox, he was affectiona­tely known to family as “Tom” and was raised in New Haven and Milford, graduating from Notre Dame High School (West Haven) in 1960. John served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era in Chitose, Japan. He graduated from New Haven College (now University of New Haven) with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineerin­g in 1970. He was employed as an electrical engineer for the State of CT Dept. of Transporta­tion and then the Dept. of Public Utility Control for over 30 years until his retirement in 1997. Following his retirement and paying homage to his love of cars, John worked at Schaller in New Britain for several years. John was a Newington resident since 1976 and was a devout Catholic and parishione­r of St. Mary’s Church in Newington. He was proud to be a 4th degree member and former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. John was an avid Red Sox fan and animal lover. He had an affinity for crossword puzzles and newspapers – reading at least 3 per day – and will be remembered for his great sense of humor. When he proposed to Carole, he promised to take as good care of her as he did of his car! Along with his wife, he leaves his daughter Mary Ann Cox of Queens, NY, his cousins, Betsy Jette of Cheshire, Jack Brennan and his wife Pat of Bonita Springs, FL, Jim Brennan and his wife Terri of Cheshire and their families. He also leaves his sister-in-law Janet Magyar of Fairfield and last, but definitely not least, his best friend and Army buddy, Joseph Rizzico and his wife Charlene of Jefferson, GA. He was predecease­d by his sister Mary Anselm Cox and by several aunts and uncles. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, April 2nd from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Duksa Family Funeral Home at Newington Memorial, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Newington. He will be laid to rest with military honors in West Meadow Cemetery, Newington.
