Patricia (Pat) Maltese Byrne, affectionately known as Patty to her siblings, Pat-pat to her many great and great great nieces and nephews, Trish and Tishie to her many friends, passed peacefully on March 31, 2024 surrounded by her family after suffering from dementia. Pat was born on July 31, 1942, to the late Assunta (Mary) and Giovanni (John) Maltese immigrants from Italy. Pat leaves behind her beloved daughters Mary Ann Steuernagel (Craig) of Cromwell, Susan Connors of Old Lyme, her adored grandson Matthew Steuernagel (fiancée Amanda Potts) of Cromwell, her cherished siblings, brothers John Maltese (Marie) of Naples, Florida and Kenneth Maltese (Janet) of Middletown, sister Anne Adduci of Meriden, sister in law Theresa Maltese and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband the Hon. John M. Byrne and her brothers Thomas, Vincent, Corrado, and Richard Maltese, her sisters Mary Siedorock, Frances Samsel, Antionette Cronin, Carmelina Suorwiecki and Paula and Salvatrice Maltese. Pat was devoted to her family and loved hosting dinners and holidays and celebrating even the littlest occasion if it meant she got to spend time with them. She and Jack loved having her family to their home in Cape Cod, teaching them to go crabbing and clamming and treating them to many wonderful getaways. She enjoyed her many travels to Italy, Ireland, Portugal, Canada, the Caribbean and anywhere there was a casino! Like the rest of her siblings, she loved to play cards and was the first to encourage the younger generations saying it was good for their math and analytical skills. She loved to shop and had a shoe collection that could rival Imelda Marcos. She also loved listening to Italian music and was an avid reader. She loved her sweets and kept Friendly's in business with her regular Jim Dandy Sundae runs. She loved to laugh and have fun, but when it came to work she was extremely driven and hard working. She proudly spent 34 years of her career in Middletown Superior Court culminating in her serving as the Deputy Chief Clerk of GA 9. She is already greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched. Heartfelt thanks go out to all who cared for Pat during her valiant battle with dementia. A Funeral Liturgy will be held at 11 AM on Friday April 5th at St. Pius X Church, 310 Westfield Street, Middletown; a burial will follow at Saint Sebastian Cemetery. Friends may call prior to the service 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver Street, Middletown.
