A man is in custody on felony charges after police say he shot someone in the chest during a dispute in East Hartford late Sunday.

James Tate, 33, of West Hartford was arrested on charges of first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal discharge of a firearm and second-degree breach of peace, according to Marc Caruso of the East Hartford Police Department.

In a statement issued Monday, Caruso said officers responded to 467 Silver Lane just before 9:50 p.m. on a report of shots fired and found a male in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Life-saving measures were performed by police and members of the East Hartford Fire Department before the victim was taken in an ambulance to an area hospital.

Caruso said Monday the victim has been listed in stable condition.

During the investigation, police learned that the victim was involved in a physical dispute when Tate allegedly pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest, according to Caruso.

Tate left the area before officers arrived and was later identified as the suspect, Caruso said. He turned himself in and was being held on $250,000 bond.

“The investigation is still active, and detectives are currently going through surveillance videos and speaking with possible witnesses,” Caruso said. “This appears to be an isolated incident, and there is no immediate threat to the public.”
