Plumley, Harriet Frodyma
Harriet I. Plumley, 90, of Simsbury, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Mclean in Simsbury. Born in Holyoke, MA on May 15, 1933, to the late Michael and Katherine (Bloniarz) Frodyma, she lived in South Windsor for many years before moving to Canton and then Simsbury. Harriet earned her bachelor's degree in English Literature from Antioch College, where, after being abandoned by the other couple on a double date, she met the man who would become her husband of 60 years. Following graduation she was an Editor for Uconn Publications, a position she left to focus on raising her family. Music was one of her lifelong loves. An accomplished pianist, she particularly enjoyed classical, jazz and pop music, in addition to Broadway shows and tunes. Harriet possessed a lighting fast, sometimes sarcastic wit, aided by a sophisticated command of the English language. This same mastery enabled her often to complete the NY Times crossword puzzle. She also enjoyed card games, particularly cribbage, for which you needed more than luck were you, her opponent. Harriet was an avid fan of sports. She was a standout point guard on the Holyoke High women's basketball team and a star tennis player, a sport she was asked to teach at Antioch. Throughout her life she continued to follow tennis tournaments, cheered loudly for the Uconn Women's Basketball team and was a passionate and oft tortured Red Sox fan. Her love of and connection to animals was ever-present, not only with cats and dogs, but also species that exemplify the intellect and caring she admired and demonstrated, particularly elephants. Harriet's greatest love was her family, particularly her grandchildren, whom she adored more than anything (reminding her children they were a prerequisite to obtaining said grandkids). Harriet is survived by her daughter, Alison Barto and husband, Ron of Avon, CT, their children; Nick and wife, Kate, and Ben Barto; her daughter, Kristen Plumley and husband, Jeff Summerville of Ridgewood, NJ, their children; Anneli and Henry Summerville. Her beloved cat, Carlee, resides in Ridgewood as well. She was predeceased by her adoring husband, Arthur L. Plumley and a son, Evan Plumley. A Celebration of her life will take place on Thursday, April 18, 2024, 11:00AM at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon, CT 06001.
