Christopher W. Nugent
SARASOTA - Chris Nugent loved people. He enjoyed nothing more than starting to chat with a stranger, who wouldn’t be a stranger for long. A lover of stories, he told his own and listened to others’ with special curiosity about young people. He was loved by many—former students, fellow classmates, and myriad contacts from every phase of his life.
He was held dear by his beloved wife Prill Nugent and cherished daughter Maggie Fullilove-Nugent. He is fondly remembered by his older sister Emily Carrier as well as several nieces and cousins. A native of Gwynedd Valley, PA, Chris graduated cum laude from Amherst College in Amherst, MA. Graduate School brought him to The University of Chicago, where he earned a Master of Arts in Teaching. Chicago would be his home for the following 40-some years. Chris taught in the Chicago Public Schools, including the experimental “school without walls,” Metro High School. He went on to a career in politics and ultimately, the insurance industry. He was a long-time broker for charitable not-for-profit organizations in the Chicago area.
Chris and Prill moved from Chicago to Sarasota, FL, in the late 2010’s. In retirement, as throughout his life, Chris was an insatiable reader of all genres, styles, and formats. With a passion for live theater, opera, and classical music, Chris never stopped absorbing news, especially political news. He also took great pleasure in volunteering at Sarasota’s Resurrection House, with a generous spirit and kind heart for all.
Services will be held for Chris on Friday, October 13, 2023, at 11:00 am, followed by a luncheon reception, at St. Boniface Episcopal Church, 5615 Midnight Pass Road, Sarasota FL 34234.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Resurrection House, a forward thinking, faith-based resource center committed to transitioning at-risk individuals to a path of self-sufficiency. Chris loved Res House. He and Prill were regular volunteers and supporters. He would be very touched by any donations made in his memory.
