NOTEBOOK Mariners RHP Woo exits season debut with injury

-

Seattle right-hander Bryan Woo left his season debut after 41⁄3 scoreless innings Friday night against the visiting Oakland Athletics for precautionary reasons, according to the Mariners.

The team added that Woo’s status would be updated following the game.

Woo allowed just one hit and left with the Mariners leading 5-0, just two outs shy of qualifying for a victory. Woo missed the start of the season with right elbow inflammation.

After Woo retired Oakland’s Tyler Soderstrom on a foul popup to open the fifth inning, Mariners manager Scott Servais, pitching coach Pete Woodworth and a member of the team’s training staff came to the mound to check on Woo, who had thrown 62 pitches.

Woo walked off with the trainer and Trent Thornton was called in from the bullpen.

As a rookie in 2023, the 24-year-old Woo was 4-5 with a 4.21 ERA in 18 starts for Seattle.

Mariners RHP Brash undergoes Tommy John surgery

Seattle Mariners right-hander Matt Brash underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday and will be sidelined for at least part of the 2025 season, general manager Justin Hollander told reporters prior to Friday’s home game against the Oakland Athletics.

Hollander said the UCL was repaired and a brace was installed in Brash’s pitching arm.

“We anticipate 12 months and back at it, so hopefully June of next year he’ll be back and ready to go,” Hollander said.

“This is a tough one. Usually I don’t give more detail than the injury.”

Brash hasn’t pitched this season and was shut down from throwing in late April.

Brash, who turns 26 on Sunday, led the majors with 78 appearances last season and went 9-4 with four saves and a 3.06 ERA.
