How bad is it to throw ice down a garbage disposal?

-

The ruckus may sound like the cubes are wrecking the disposal, but it’s the opposite. When knocked around by the spinning mechanism, “ice can remove food residue stuck to the chamber wall,” says Chris Nealon, a group manager for Moen. Left standing, that gunk could cause foul odors. Ice cubes are handy for dislodging softer, stickier stuff like pasta, mashed potatoes, and rice. Run the water when the cubes go down, and chase them with a shake of baking soda or a couple drops of dish soap for max stink control. Oh, and don’t pour boiling water or bleach down the drain to clean it, says Nealon—over time, that could damage pipes.

NOT BAD AT ALL!
