Each pawpaw tree has a monthlong season that, depending on cultivar and region, may start in August and end in October. It’s best to determine ripeness by feel rather than color. The flesh should give like a ripe peach. The fruit should easily twist off the tree when ripe or be on the ground. If the skin starts to blacken, don’t worry. That just means it’s ripe, not necessarily overripe.
