Mix Up a Batch of Bokashi

You’ll find lots of recipes online for various types of bokashi bran and readymade products if you want to skip the time and energy required to make your own. Here’s the recipe and mixing method for a bokashi bran plus mixture as demonstrat­ed by a local small-scale organic farmer in Central California.

Ingredient­s

• 5 gallons red flaky wheat bran

• 2½ gallons of spring water

• 1 cup Azomite

• 1 tablespoon Sea-90 (dehydrated sea water)

• 2½ ounces blackstrap molasses

• 2½ ounces organic pure beet juice (not concentrat­e)

• ½ cup powdered multivitam­in with amino acids

• 2½ ounces of EM-1 microbial inoculant

Directions

Combine all liquid ingredient­s into a bucket and stir. Add all dry ingredient­s to liquid mixture, except the wheat bran. Stir thoroughly. Pour liquid mixture into a large tub for easy mixing. Add about half of the wheat bran. Begin mixing by hand, kneading like bread dough as the mixture becomes more solid. Add a quarter of the remaining wheat bran and continue to hand-mix/knead.

Add the rest of the wheat bran and finish mixing/kneading until you have a consistent mixture without any specks of dry ingredient­s remaining. Place the finished batch into a large trash bag, and compact it down to remove as much air from the bag as possible. Seal the bag.

Place the bag into an airtight bucket or other container to ferment for about two weeks. After fermentati­on occurs, spread bran mixture out onto a clean, dry tarp to dry out. It should have a sweet somewhat vinegary smell. Once dried, your bran can be packaged and stored.
