If you find yourself facing a frost and don’t have row covers yet or not enough, tarps will work to some degree, especially the heavier ones, often brown or green, as opposed to the cheap lightweight blue ones. Keeping the tarp material (or any plastic) from touching the plants is important during a frost. Small plantings can be covered with whatever you’ve got on hand: sheets, blankets, etc., which will protect them at least for light frost.
