Body of dead hiker found on Hawaii island

Honolulu Star-Advertiser - - LOCAL | HAWAII REPORT -

A hiker was discovered on Tuesday afternoon along the coastline in Kalapana Gardens on Hawaii island.

Hawaii County police said the badly decomposed body was found clad in a gray T-shirt and green shorts in a remote location.

Because of the body’s advanced state of decomposition, the age, gender or identity of the victim could not be immediately determined.

Police secured the scene until Wednesday morning. The body was airlifted by the fire department’s helicopter out of the area and transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where a death pronouncement was made. An autopsy was requested. The case is classified as an unattended death.

Anyone who may have seen someone with this description in the area or have any information is asked to call the police non-emergency line at 935-3311 or Detective Wendall Carter at 961-2383 or Wendall.Carter@hawaiicounty.gov.
