Collision in Kihei closes road

Honolulu Star-Advertiser - - HAWAII REPORT -

A collision on North Kihei Road, about 2 miles south of Honoapiilani Highway, closed the road to traffic for about four hours Wednesday. A white 1990 Ford Ranger facing south on the makai shoulder of the road made a U-turn and was broadsided by a garbage truck traveling south, according to Maui police.

The driver of the Ranger, a 33-year-old Kihei man, was not wearing a seat belt and sustained life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment. The operator and passenger in the garbage truck were wearing their seat belts and not injured.

The investigation is ongoing and it was not yet known whether speed, drugs or alcohol were factors.
