OUT TO PASTURE: It was hardly the bright­est car driven into Famoso’s Grove, but the sub­tly shaved trim and ex­panded quar­ters sucked us in. Two tiny tow tabs, barely vis­i­ble be­low the bumper, com­pleted the im­pres­sion of an old war­rior. Rex Clif­ford lusted for it since the day that a straight-axled, tun­nel-rammed ’55 first rum­bled into his home­town of Mesa, Ari­zona. That guy sold it to one of Rex’s bud­dies, who even­tu­ally made a teenage dream come true. Forty years later, the old warhorse still runs a 327, tamed by a free­way-friendly com­bi­na­tion of sin­gle quad, Turbo 400, and 2.73:1 teeth in its 9-inch rear.
