7-11 Mystery Photos Solved

Hot Rod Deluxe - - Scrapbook -

In our Jan. 2018 issue, we ran a selection of photos of the 7-11 coupe (“Son of the 7-11,” Sept. ’17) that was found by Art Director Roberta Conroy in the Petersen Photo Archives. That story’s author, Scotty Gosson, showed the photos to Mike Dowell, the half-brother of the car’s third owner, Kent Singleton. It was Kent who gave the coupe its 7-11 name and bright orange paint. Mike was able to shed some light on the photos Roberta found. The lead photo (reproduced here) was shot in Santa Ana in 1961. Racing team member Jim Nelson is at left, Kent Singleton at right. “My bro [Singleton] and Nelson did all the work,” Mike said. “Burl Wilson at Guaranty Chevrolet shot the orange paint.”—drew Hardin
