The Banger in the Shed
Really enjoyed your article on Red’s tub (“(Al)ways in the Family,” Jan. 2018).
I knew Red. He came by when we had race car meetings. I would ask him about his Cammer. He said it ran great, no problems, and he bought it from a high school principal.
In 1970, I was able to buy this engine from a guy who located it in a shed while buying some chickens. I got the engine less carbs. A Model T water pump was still bolted to the side of the A block with sprockets. Note I said A block, which is what it was. Not a stroked Model C, it’s an A crank. It does have the Miller exhaust cam.
About six years ago, I put it in my ’29 tub, kind of a restored car. I made up patterns and cast up different side plates. The stainless headers were made by Bud Hand. Not running yet, not sure when. I looked in the mirror the other day. Some 90-year-old guy was looking back at me. Oh, well.
1243. Anyone need an explanation as to the closing of Bill’s letter? Didn’t think so….
