How Fast?

Excellent mag as always, thanks, though often a little hard to get here in England. But hey, that makes it even better when I get my copy!

Question about the editorial from March 2018 (Flag Man). There’s a picture of the June 1955 NHRA event at Scappoose, Oregon, where Eric Rickman enjoyed the two dragsters battling for top speed of the meet. Any idea what speed they were running?

We know exactly, thanks to Rickman’s excellent reportage. Don Fancher’s Ardun/merc dragster, pictured ( left) in our Flag Man column, was runner-up for top speed at 134 mph. The Blanchard & Eayrs dragster, also Merc flathead powered, set the top speed at 135.54 mph. The team, seen here celebrating at the end of the day, also won the Dragster class and Top Eliminator with a 132.15-mph pass.
