A flip-top flips at Bakersfield, saying goodbye to Tim Marshall and Dale Emery, and on the Scene at the Grand National Roadster Show and March Meet.

Bob Godfrey’s Burnin’ Money Nostalgia Funny Car lived up to its name on a spectacularly unsuccessful March Meet qualifying attempt, burning through a late-model Hemi and beating up its Barracuda body. As if fire and oil and bouncing slicks weren’t keeping Australian shoe Steve Easton plenty busy, the absent firewall exposed him to a blinding spray of foam as he expertly slid

the mess to a safe stop. Veteran photographer and regular Deluxe contributor Paul Sadler was perfectly positioned atop a man lift beyond Famoso Raceway’s finish line. Coolly zooming his Nikkor 80-400mm lens, Paul produced one of the best sequences of any Funny Car era. From his 110 (!) individual frames, we chose as many as would fit this spread without undue downsizing.
