Patience pays off.

Deer Park, Washington (outside of Spokane), was stop number four (out of a total of 17) for the 1955 Drag Safari. The race, hosted by the Inland Empire Timing Association, drew entrants primarily from nearby Washington cities and towns, though some came from as far away as Minnesota and Nebraska to test their mettle on the “choice surface” of the Deer Park runway. Just one dragster made the scene; most of the racers drove Stock cars and Gas coupes and sedans. Eric Rickman captured this timeless shot of Norman Miller working on his ’53 Olds in preparation for B/stock competition. “With the car’s load thoroughly lightened,” began the caption in the Sept. 1955 issue of HOT ROD, Norman “works on his Oldsmobile’s engine as Frances Orem sits patiently by.”

Norman’s work—and Frances’ dedication—paid off, as Norman won his class that day with a 70.02-mph pass.
