Honoring Dave Wallace Jr., and more.
This year’s California Hot Rod Reunion (Oct. 19-21, Famoso Raceway, Bakersfield; nhra.
com/hotrodreunions) will be extra-special for HR Deluxe fans, as our own Dave Wallace Jr. will be among the honorees.
For most of you, Dave’s background is well known. In case you’re late to the party: Dave literally grew up around drag racing. As a kid he accompanied his father, Dave Sr., to the drags; Sr. served as track photographer and reporter at San Fernando. Dave Jr.’s first byline appeared in Drag News in 1964, at age 14, and he took over his dad’s reporting duties at 15. An automotive journalist was born.
Career highlights include a stint as editor of Drag News and a long association with Petersen Publishing (and the companies that bought it), where he was feature editor at HOT ROD and the founding editor of Petersen’s Drag Racing magazine. After leaving Petersen he started his own advertising agency, Good Communications, which he continued to run even after the powers-that-be dragged him back here to be editor of Deluxe from 2011 to 2013.
Dave was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 2008 and joins yet another illustrious group in 2018. Also being honored at this year’s CHRR are Bob Brandt, former crew chief for Don Prudhomme; A/fuel Dragster pilot Jerry Darien; Funny Car, Top Fuel, and Nostalgia Top Fuel racer Jim Murphy; and another PPC alum, Rick Voegelin, former Car Craft editor and a prolific freelancer and PR rep.
STARTING YOUNGSTARTING YOUNG: When we say Dave grew up around drag racing, we meant that literally. Here the youngster is taking tickets at the San Fernando gate.
FEARLESS: Jim Bernasconi got this shot of Dave getting up close with Garlits at Fremont in 1980. FEARLESS
THE WALL: Dave on the Famoso wall at the 2017 March Meet. The bottle contains delicious spring water from his Norcal digs; ask and he’ll gladly share, which can be a welcome relief during Bakersfield’s hot fall days. THE WALL
