Nichels/goldsmith Indy Roadster
I really enjoy Hot Rod Deluxe and look forward to reading every copy. I enjoyed the pic of the Nichels and Goldsmith car in your “Backstage Past” story in the Jan. 2019 issue. You should do a story about them. They were pioneers of Indy and NASCAR cars. I grew up in northwestern Indiana where their shop was located.
Ray Nichels built his first race car in the basement of his parent’s house, Basement Betty, which I think is now in the Indy Museum.
Paul Goldsmith raced Pikes Peak and NASCAR. These guys were very innovative with Pontiacs and, later, Mopars. I saw the first Daytona No. 71 at their shop. My friends and I thought it was the coolest car ever with that big wing on the back! I’m curious to know just how many race cars came out of their Griffith, Indiana, shop.
Here we’ve reprinted the photo he referred to from the January issue and also his artwork on the back of his envelope.
