Hot Rod - - Roddin’ @ Random - Dave Wallace

September 1958 (100 pages, 35¢): Ray Brock returned from his annual Colorado trek with exciting news, great photos, and grease on his hands. Ak Miller’s Chevy-powered Devin, entered and lettered as the HOT ROD Magazine Special, won the first running of Pikes Peak’s Sports Car class with hands-on help from our tech editor, who wrenched on its Hilborn-injected small-block between snapping pictures. Brock surely had less fun conducting what must’ve been the slowest new-car showdown in HRM history. Worse, the Swedish entrant embarrassed the American (Rambler, that is) at both the dragstrip (20.3 to 20.5 seconds) and gas pump (28.8 to 25 mpg).
